Bill became an outdoor enthusiast at a young age (approximately 8 years of age) when his father purchased him his first BB gun. Since then, Bill has enjoyed decades of hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and many other outdoor endeavors. He is a life-long member of the Roby Hollow Rod & Gun Club which remains one of his favorite places to visit. As the oldest of nine children, Bill grew up just south of this location on an approximately 100 acre farm where he and his siblings farmed with mules before modernizing to tractors. While still a teenager, Bill drove truck, hauling coal from Pennsylvania’s coal-mining region and a short time later, founded his own trucking company (Hummer Trucking), hauling potatoes from Maine. He later drove full-time for Borg Warner Trucking. During his 40+ years with Borg Warner, Bill was recognized for logging nearly 2 million accident free miles. After retirement he continued driving truck for Burkholder Bros. (hauling eggs), and for Hummer Turf Systems (hauling sod). By the end of his trucking career, Bill had driven more than 2 million accident free miles across the U.S. It’s been said that Bill never met a stranger he didn’t know and in recent years he welcomed anyone to pull up a lawn chair in his driveway and enjoy the picturesque view of the farm he grew up on. Bill currently resides at Pleasant View Communities (Manheim).
